BOULEVARDS SHARES NEW SINGLE “SANITY”

S/T EP RELEASED 25TH SEPTEMBER 2015 ON OWN LABEL DON’T FUNK WITH ME

Boulevards, AKA Raleigh native Jamil Rashad, recently announced his self-titled EP (due out 25th September) and shared the single “Got to Go.” Now, the modern funk songwriter and performer releases his new single “Sanity” – premiered via SPIN – who call it “a head-bopping, neo-funk jam; a sonic time machine to a supa-fly ’70s dance party.”
The son of a jazz radio DJ, Rashad grew up in a house that fostered an early interest in a variety of music; jazz, blues, R&B and funk records were on constant rotation. As a teen, he (a self-confessed “scene kid” in the NC area) branched out into punk, hardcore and metal, whose sound characteristics of technical precision and tight, economic power, would later go on to influence Rashad’s own productions.
After a couple stints in local bands and an art school education, Rashad returned to his first love: funk, and began writing/recording as Boulevards, whose music is simply described by the artist as “party funk jams for the heart and soul to make you move.” Following in the footsteps of pioneers like Prince, Rick James and Earth, Wind & Fire, Boulevards synthesizes their influences with the adventurousness of Talking Heads and Grace Jones, modernizing the sound with current production values that nod to Pharrell and Breakbot, alongside both modern and vintage hip hop intonations.

This 4-track EP looks back at the post-disco boogie sound, while steadfastly looking to the future. Working with producers Isaac Gálvez, Taste Nasa and Rollergirl!, Boulevards has delivered on his promise for party jams. The infectious two-minute incessant bass hook of “Got to Go,” the future electro of “Forgot to Mention,” the mid-tempo groove of “Honesty” and the Bootsy Collins-meets-Quincy Jones-in-2015 attack of “Sanity,” lay down the template for the Shape of Funk to Come. And the funk to come will be Boulevards.
