‘Dear Body’ is dedicated to anyone who struggles to love their body: a powerful, 80s-leaning ballad with startlingly honest lyricism about your image, self-worth, and ultimately inner strength. “Dear body / I just wanna say I’m sorry / Cos I’d never do this to somebody else / but it’s easy to hurt myself.”
In the last year or so, Bow Anderson has taken her positive sound into increasingly unguarded but ultimately empowering territory. Recent single ‘Midnight’ harnessed the incessant worries and racing thoughts of a sleepless night as a pillar of inspiration rather than fear, picking up where viral hit ‘20s’ left off: uploaded on Christmas Eve as an idea – and sound – she was trying it out at the time, the track blew up online with support across Radio 1, Spotify’s Viral Charts, millions of TikTok views & 30 weeks on the German Airplay charts.
In its own way, ‘Dear Body’ also reflects on Bow Anderson’s unorthodox story to date – your relationship with your body, and its limitations. She first burst onto the scene with ‘Sweater’, earning widespread plaudits and millions of streams despite dropping the very day the world went into lockdown. ‘Sweater’ only hinted at the drive and stoic spirit that’s always been integral to Bow: as a teenager she trained in competitive trampolining, working with gymnasts who would go on to be part of Team GB before a freak accident threatened her ability even to walk, least of all compete. As her body went through rehabilitation Bow found her voice, moving to London and throwing it all into 60s-leaning debut EP ‘New Wave’. On ‘20s’, Bow changed things up again, baring her soul and striking a nerve. Already, Anderson has scooped the Best Pop Act prize at the prestigious Scottish Music Awards, supported the likes of Mimi Webb, Tom Walker and Ella Eyre, and collaborated with MTV and Adidas Originals whilst working on new songs to follow.
Whether discussing a ‘20s’ crisis, a ‘Midnight’ meltdown or penning a tribute like ‘Dear Body’, Bow Anderson’s obstacles (romantic, physical or generational) increasingly sound like a source of strength.
