Brighton’s favourite power-trio are riding high following a big year. In 2018 they toured Europe, signed to London based label Roadkill Records, released their debut EP on vinyl and sold out their biggest headlines to date. Now looking forward, they’ve announced their first track of the year – ‘Go Ahead’.
The track was written shortly after a secret Halloween show with tour mates Tigercub in which Projector performed a set of Pixies covers. Influence came from the experience of learning those songs, as well as from their friends and contemporaries Murmer and Demob Happy. “The song itself is about people who needlessly martyr themselves” explains lyricist Edward Ensbury,“Like, when you set yourself an objective and then blindly set off after it but stop taking in new information. It can be justified to yourself by working at it as hard as you can, but in reality it’s just laziness of thought, if not of action. Everyone is guilty of this to some degree. It’s very easy to decide on a course of action you want and then find the evidence to support it after the fact, but in anything it’s important to stop at every step on the way and re-evaluate whether what you are doing is still any good… or it’s about fish. I haven’t decided.”
Celebrated at The Rialto Theatre in Brighton and The Waiting Room in London, the band are kicking off 2019 with the kind of anthemic single they’ve become known for. ‘Go Ahead’ utilizes the best of duel vocalists Ensbury and Lucy Sheehan’s harmonies against walls of gritty grunge-fueled guitars, blistering aggression and unparalleled confidence from drummer Demelza Mather.
Projector occupy the heavy space between brooding 80s darkwave and My Bloody Valentine’s wall-of-sound pop; a dual tone of ‘Goo’ era Sonic Youth and Pixies pulled together with an industrial Joy Division pulse. Energetic, impassioned gigs showcase a band with both pop sensibility and experimental depth.
They’ve supported the likes of Tigercub, Demob Happy, Deap Vally and Blood Red Shoes, and are due to support Xcerts and Desperate Journalist as well as securing slots at UK festivals The Great Escape and Camden Rocks.
