“The heady combination of dreamlike stories and dense instrumentals makes ‘Like an Island’ a personable, evocative, and impressive record” – Dork ★ ★ ★ ★
“Feral Guitar, Torn-from-the-chest lyrics…sensational” – The Sunday Times
‘…searing’ – DIY “A voice that deserves attention” – Consequence of Sound
Throughout her career Bryde has tackled challenging subject matter, exploring the curious relationship between vulnerability and empowerment with a psychological nuance and honesty that pegs her as a truly distinct new voice on the international indie circuit.
Mixed by Catherine Marks (Wolf Alice, PJ Harvey and St Vincent), and mastered by Mandy Parnell, her debut album Like An Island is a record of catharsis which gives a voice to bad times and exorcises old demons. Other credits include Domino’s Bill Ryder-Jones who produced last year’s “sensational” (Sunday Times) EP 2, Chris Sorem, Simon Byrt and Kristoffer Rylander.
Prefaced by the singles ‘Desire’, ‘Peace’ and ‘To Be Brave’, Like An Island is the sound of an artist confronting the perplexities of lived experience to rise from the fathomless depths remade, an island of calm from an ocean of chaos. While not a concept album, its music interrogates the bipolar states we all find ourselves in. Through the sparsity of piano ballad ‘Euphoria’ she reminds us that each descent into the depths of crippling self doubt is also an opportunity to emerge remade. But all too often, these free falls make us easy prey to the temptations of self-annihilation as the motorik and hell-raising ’Fast Awake’ cannily points out.
It comes out today through Bryde’s own label Seahorse Music which was founded it to publish records by like-minded women and help make them more visible in a male-dominated industry. This record is the culmination of all of Bryde’s experience with her craft so far, and support for it is also rapidly ramping up, with NPR recognising Bryde’s voice as “equally stunning and chilling.”
Bryde has just set off on her biggest UK, IRE and EU tour so far. It’s a sprawling 29 date stretch in April and May that will see her peddling her inimitable brand of incisive lyricism and raucous rock and roll to her widest audience yet. She also plays Latitude, Boardmasters, Y Not and Standon Calling among other festivals this summer.
Expanding their work from records to the live circuit, Bryde’s label Seahorse are showcasing an all-female line up at Camden Assembly on 31st July with Warchild and Ticketmaster. Details to follow.
There is little doubt, whether on wax or on stage, that this year is a pivotal one in her career so far.
Like An Island comes out today on Seahorse Music.
