Burnt Out Wreck – ‘Swallow’ (Out 10 February 2017 on TRHRC/Cherry Red)
Fronted by Gary Moat, originally the drummer and founder member of Glasgow (Scotland legends Heavy Pettin’, this is effectively Gary’s first solo album and what a cracker it is.
Very much in the Heavy Pettin’ vein, albeit a little heavier, and the opening track ‘Burnt Out Wreck’ features some crunchy guitar and solid rhythms. Moat’s vocals are on the high side, not too dissimilar to Heavy Pettin’s, with a rough edge and a lot more rock’n’roll. Some vocal harmonies boost the song week. The title track has a touch of AC/DC which makes for a good listen by any standard. That rough’n’ready rock’n’roll feel follows across several tracks making for quite a retro feel, the emphasis on the riff and feel still gives plenty of room for a blistering solo or two; ‘Pulling It Out’ a stand out track on every level. There’s even a touch of both Scott and Johnson to the vocals in places.
The album as a rocking groove beginning to end and is really well worth checking out. 8/10
