North London vocalist and songwriter Catching Cairo returns with her latest single ‘Fingerprints’, a collaboration with drum & bass heavyweight Turno, released 3rd July via 0207 Def Jam.
The release marks another step towards Catching Cairo’s forthcoming body of work, a project rooted in self-discovery, London rave culture, and the legacy of Black British sound system music. Pairing Turno’s unmistakable production with Catching Cairo’s deeply emotive songwriting, Fingerprints explores the lasting impact people leave on us. Blending moments of vulnerability with the intensity of modern drum & bass, the track captures the emotional honesty that has become synonymous with Catching Cairo’s music while delivering a powerful, dancefloor-ready anthem.
Catching Cairo comments, “Fingerprints is a love story of sorts in the thick of bass and drums. Didn’t wanna know, but something’s changed and now I need you all over me. I feel like even though it’s quite situational and obvious, the more I sing it, the more it seems to transcend the different parts of being, especially in this music game. You try to be nonchalant about the desires of success and visibility, but in time it reveals itself that actually no, I want it, I want it all. I want the world’s fingerprints, their eyes, their ears all over me. I want to be seen, I don’t want (them) to forget it.”
Originally from North London, Catching Cairo has become one of the defining Black female voices in contemporary drum & bass. Her unmistakable vocals have soundtracked landmark releases with Hybrid Minds, Kasra, London Elektricity, BCee, Sustance, Mungo’s Hi Fi and many more, while her 2017 collaboration Touch with Hybrid Minds has surpassed 80 million Spotify streams and remains one of the genre’s modern classics.
Following the release of her debut Aura EP and the acclaimed Bruz EP, Catching Cairo has continued to establish herself as both a songwriter and performer. From a viral Balamii session that amassed millions of views to joining Becky Hill on her UK arena tour, performing to more than 120,000 people, she has steadily built a reputation as one of UK dance music’s most compelling live vocalists.
While her catalogue spans drum & bass, jungle, dubstep and UK bass, Catching Cairo’s songwriting reaches far beyond electronic music. Drawing inspiration from artists including Ms Dynamite, Lauryn Hill, Frank Ocean, James Blake, Erykah Badu, Bob Marley and Mariah Carey, her music fuses soulful storytelling with the sounds that shaped her upbringing: reggae, garage, jungle, dubstep and the rich heritage of London’s sound system culture.
As Catching Cairo continues her unstoppable ascent, one thing is clear: the voice of the underground is no longer underground. This is a sound born of the city, built for the world, and her moment is now.
