Forget American Independence Day. This is bigger. This year, we’ll be raising a glass and waving a flag on 14th June, Charles Bradley Day – the day Britain and America come together in a warm embrace as the ‘Screaming Eagle of Soul’ himself descends upon UK shores for 24 hours of very special career-defining moments.

Proceedings commence from 6am when Bradley will join Bill Turnbull and Susanna Reid on the BBC Breakfast sofa to discuss his life to date, the exclusive new film ‘Charles Bradley: Soul Of America’, and his forthcoming appearance at this year’s 177,000-capacity Glastonbury Festival, where he will perform in the newly reborn and named Dance Village ‘Silver Hayes’, alongside young guns Gold Panda, AlunaGeorge, Wiley, and Rudimental.
The premiere of ‘Charles Bradley: Soul Of America’ will then air for the very first time as part of a BBC Four series of Great Voices, alongside films about long-standing artists Bobby Womack and Otis Redding. At that exact moment, Bradley will be suited and booted, taking to the stage to perform a soul-stirring, hip-shaking, crowd-pleasing, sold out show to loyal fans at London’s Islington Assembly Hall.

You’ll already know Bradley as a man with music in his veins; his frayed, impassioned vocals rising up into a wail of gargantuan proportions, and a humble, warm human being in awe of, and truly thankful for, the love of all those who support him. Yet there’s more to Bradley’s story. Taking you through how he transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs – most famously as a James Brown impersonator at Brooklyn clubs – before finally being discovered by Daptone’s Gabriel Roth and meeting Thomas Brenneck and the whole Daptone Records family. This was the point at which his life was truly transformed. ‘Charles Bradley: Soul Of America’ is more than a documentary: It’s a life changer.
“The storm is behind me, but still you have to give me time to heal my wounds,” says Bradley. “I’ve got a lot more confidence in myself now and this is my mission… I should’ve been doing this a long time ago. It took so long for the world to find me but I’m here now.”

He’s right. While most films merely trawl the archives of great artists’ past achievements, ‘Charles Bradley: Soul Of America’ documents a truly incredible artist currently at his creative peak. The year following the release of debut album No Time For Dreaming saw one triumph after another, and this latest record Victim of Love has only added to an already hectic schedule. In album track and forthcoming single ‘You Put The Flame on It’ Bradley sings “My life is gold – you put the flame on it,” backed by horns that sound like they were lifted from a lost Four Tops single. Enthusiastic, grateful and overflowing with love to share, Bradley has emerged from his troubled past stronger and more confident. We defy anyone not to fall in love with him.
