Chicago’s premier indie pop band Varsity to capstone their monthly singles project with the album ‘Souvenirs’ (2/16)
Chicago indie-pop Varsity’s upcoming album is coming out at the end of next week (2/16). Their upcoming record Souvenirs capstones their creative experiment last year where they wrote, recorded, produced, and released a song once a month for 12 months straight.
After releasing Fine Forever off of Run For Cover at the height of lockdown in 2020, Varsity wanted to do something completely different and free of the usual “album cycle.” Their monthly series meant at the beginning of a given month they did not always know what the song would be or sound like until close to the end of that month. This recent Hypebeast article outlines their project well too.
Here’s the stream to the record and here’s the link to the PR (includes links to assets, quotes, bio, and more). They’re releasing the album on Friday, February 16 to coincide with their first live show in over two years the following day in Chicago (Schubas, 2/17).
Hence the title, the idea behind Souvenirs is about capturing a moment in time and having these songs to look back on. Souvenirs is a fun, wacky experiment, and the next record will be a bit more traditional. But they learned a lot about what they want to do as a band in the past year, honing their home recording and production skills in the process for their next release.
