Today, Christopher Owens – the celebrated singer-songwriter and former frontman of beloved indie rock band Girls – shares “I Think About Heaven” (True Panther Records), a sunny, hopeful contemplation on self-reliance and the interplay between longing and contentment.

While Owens work has long toyed with retoolings of religious texts and imagery, here he pulls directly from Psalms 42 as he croons “as the hart panteth after the water brooks / in this way my soul searches for your love” over a delicate and driving acoustic guitar strum. As the instrumental unfolds, the song turns into an anthem of finding the answers to life’s hardest questions within oneself. Owens sings ”I think about heaven and I smile, I think about heaven and I break into a big grin” and sounds completely at peace.

Christopher Owens is no stranger to loss and hardship – in the years since his last release (2017’s Vante by Curls) he has faced a motorcycle accident that left him immobilized, battles with homelessness, and the passing of former Girls bandmate Chet “JR” White. But throughout these challenges, Owens found solace in his guitar and a newfound depth to his love of songwriting, calling it his “constant companion.” The photograph featured on the single artwork for “I Think About Heaven” was taken outside of the iconic Wolf’s Lair Castle in Los Angeles, longtime home of the late Shelley Duval by longtime collaborator Sandy Kim.
