New York City-based indie rock/pop musician and actor Rivkah Reyes emotionally overspends on moody, cinematic “Debt Collector” out today with its matching Coney Island-set music video. On July 28th, Reyes will support V Silver at Mercury Lounge in New York City. Find more information here.
The latest achingly honest anthem from Rivkah Reyes emerged after a breakup, immediately followed by attending a Lorde concert with said ex. Expanding on the meaning behind the stripped-back song, Reyes says, “We had a really layered connection and shared grief, so it wasn’t clean or simple. The song isn’t about longing so much as it is about compulsion, like trying to re-enter something you already know isn’t stable and convincing yourself you can do it better this time. The “debt collector” idea is about emotional leverage, like I’ll give you whatever you want if it means I still get access to you.”

Its matching video takes place along the kitschy boardwalk on Coney Island, shot on an old camcorder and directed by Johanna Block. Reyes shares, “I’ve always thought Coney Island was one of the most romantic places in the world. It’s relentlessly corny, full of characters, and dripping with old American charm. It felt like the perfect backdrop for my sweet and sad song.”
On the location enhancing the song’s themes, Reyes continues, “I think New York has this way of making every breakup feel cinematic, like it’s somehow okay to have your heart broken if you’re doing it in the greatest city in the world. We shot the entire video on a vintage camcorder because I wanted it to feel like a memory that’s already slipping away while you’re still living it.”

In May, Reyes shared “Miss Congeniality,” a confident, emo-tinged, Y2K pop banger inspired by Sandra Bullock’s famous character. Born in Chicago, Rivkah Reyes learned to play guitar at four years old and soon after, shot to fame as a child actor as “Katie” in the acclaimed 2003 comedy, School of Rock. Since then, she has continued to act, with roles in SZA and Keke Palmer’s buddy comedy, One Of Them Days Netflix’s The Merry Gentleman, the 2023 queer horror comedy short film, Gianna, written by and starring Reyes with Margaret Cho, Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls which premiered at Sundance 2023, and more. Since the beginning, music has remained constant. A string of singles has followed, including “sick” which was named Rolling Stone’s Songs You Need To Know upon its release. In 2024, Reyes shared “another vice” with last year’s “Big League Chew,” also produced by Anastasakis, to follow. Earlier this summer, Reyes visited Jam In The Van for a lively session. Now, promising more on the way, the multi-hyphenate continues to document her real, lived experiences through revealing, punchy lyricism on what she calls “sapphic doomcore situationship bangers.”
