Coco share brand new song “Rough Water”

COCO share a brand new single ahead of their debut UK shows, which include a performance at End of The Road Festival and a headline show at Omeara, London (2nd Sept). The band have also just announced the first vinyl pressing of their debut album, available to pre-order now on Bandcamp.

Coco’s music has been previously described as “gorgeous, warmly wistful” (Gorilla Vs. Bear), “unerringly intimate” (The Line of Best Fit) and “beautifully enigmatic” (MOJO), but what happens when this moody, ethereal threesome make a rock song?“Rough Water” – released today – jangles with the genius infectiousness Coco has made their custom, but opts for a rambunctious edge. Maia Friedman’s vocals are guttural, bent and boisterous in a way that recalls The Go-Go’s. Coco recorded “Rough Water” in Joshua Tree. “The open space out there really lends itself to loud music,” say the band. “It brings about a desire to shout into the emptiness. The lyrics are partly a love letter to the angry spirits and partly a self-entreaty to inhale and relish in the chaos of life.”

Coco is the project of Maia Friedman (The Dirty Projectors), Dan Molad (Lucius), and Oliver Hill (Pavo Pavo). Old friends with rich history, the trio convened with ambiguous artistic intention, easy chemistry, and open expectations. “Music sprung up between us with a surprising and collaborative ease,” they say. “It felt like a creative playground in contrast to the demands of our other projects. From the beginning, we made a conscious effort to foreground our intuitions and trust each other’s first instincts.” Coco released their stunning, self-titled debut in 2021 on First City Artists.
