Coco – Maia Friedman (Dirty Projectors), Oliver Hill (Pavo Pavo), and Dan Molad (Lucius) – will release new album 2next Friday (1st March) via First City Artists. Today, they unveil “Cora Lu”, a new single/video, alongside an excellent Paste feature.
In a string of previously-released singles – “Moodrings”, “Mythological Man”, and “Do This Right” – Coco have presented an alluring, languorous sound. Today’s “Cora Lu” [watch / listen HERE] oozes with a glowing swagger, while all three of the band member’s voices lilt over gently reverberating guitar.
“This one’s a celebration of birth, dedicated to Oliver’s eponymous niece. More specifically, the song imagines the splendors of nature through the eyes of a newborn, appreciating the colors and textures of planet Earth anew. Wall-to-wall three part harmonies felt right, adding to a feeling of wide-eyed abundance. The bass melodica and wavery-voiced choir make us think of some unspecific VHS from our childhood.” – Coco on “Cora Lu”

For 2, Coco gathered for periods of time in Richmond, Virgina, working with Adrian Olsen (Lucy Dacus, Fruit Bats, Bedouine) at Montrose Recording, and in Joshua Tree, California, self-producing in an informal desert setting. Each member a writer, player, and artist in their own right, Coco embraced a freedom in fluidity—swapping seats, instruments, and vocal parts however intuition compelled. The resulting 2 is sensuous and spellike, as Maia, Oliver, and Dan arrive to each other empty-handed and open-hearted, finding power in three equal parts. As CLASH lauds, “Moving between glacial shoegaze aspects and something more direct, and pop-centred, ‘2’ picks up on the eclecticism of their debut and injects fresh ideas.”
