Dan D’Lion has today released brand new track ‘Apple Juice’ (ft. Feder). Available now on Insanity Records, this follows the multi-hyphenated artist, producer and songwriter’s acclaimed 2020 mixtape, ‘When One Thing Leads To Another’ (where he also performed at the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend). ‘Apple Juice’ introduces Dan D’Lion’s upcoming, collaboration-focused project, which will be unveiled early next year… A brilliantly surreal collaboration with French house legend Feder, ‘Apple Juice’ is a kaleidoscopic cut of soulful pop from Dan D’Lion. Made under lockdown this is, Dans says, pure escapism: “when there’s nothing to hold you back from having the time of your life. Sweet, juicy and full of goodness.”

Dan D’Lion’s eclectic, futuristic sound found these escapist origins in his hometown of Reading. Born to a jazz drummer dad and a record collection full of soul from his mum, Dan grew up encouraged “to make as much of a racket as I could” (he also naturally gravitated towards the local legacy of rock, and idolised Rage Against The Machine) Skipping university to move to London and pursue a career in music, Dan D’Lion has since honed a visionary musical imagination; surging between Neptunes-worthy, pitch-shifted pop, emotive, electronics-tinged R&B, and glittering, Jai Paul-esque funk. Even on the rush of ‘Apple Juice’, there is something purposely off-kilter, and more than meets the eye… An increasingly-open lyrical perspective – and how hard it is for men to open up, generally – offers more clues as to who Dan D’Lion is.
As evidenced in his choice of pseudonym, Dan’s work often explores the relationship between emotional vulnerability and strength, particularly in the context of modern masculinity. Working multiple jobs to make ends meet, Dan D’Lion’s struggle to blend into the crowd found a cathartic outlet in early tracks like ‘Simmer Down’, which was written in response to being mugged (and a more generational sense of anger, fear, and paranoia). Elsewhere, tracks like ‘Betterman’ deal frankly with self-image, finding Dan admitting his flaws as a starting point for improvement: ‘When One Thing Leads To Another’, meanwhile, was a vivid soundtrack of what you learn about yourself in a relationship. All these raw experiences are channelled into songs that are often as colourful as they can be claustrophobic – confirming Dan D’Lion as an undeniable, if unpredictable, one to watch.
