Daze – Big (out 28th March)
This year has been good so far for the North Londoners, slightly puzzling to the unheard, after reading the new single by Daze is inspired by the Tom Hanks film of the same name, ‘Big’ was written about the difficulty of relationships and was recorded with Sugar House (Pale Waves, Viola Beach and Glass Caves).
Daze began when childhood friends and guitarists Sam Hong and Luke Mayer resolved to form a band that combined their shared love of the cavernous reverb of shoegaze, and the lo-fi punch of classic indie rock. The proto-band quickly went about recruiting like-minded musicians, to complete their line-up and refine their sound, and soon found bassist Santino DeLauri at the bar of their local pub, followed shortly by drummer Oliver Brenner.
About the video frontman Sam Hong says: “Our video to ‘Big’ is Tom Hanks inspired, we didn’t want a cliché indie music video and wanted to have fun on it, so we decided to parody Forrest Gump, Big, Toy Story, Captin Philips & Saving Private Ryan. Our dream is to have him watch the video so please @Tom Hanks on all social media platforms.”
Ringing media endorsements aside, it’s not a difficult task to sing the merits of the indie shoegazers, but at the heart of the for-piece, is a matter of social chemistry coupled with stronger song-writing, given the strength of ‘Big’ there may be another band to keep an eye out for. Daze may prove to be even more prolific, but avoiding the danger of reading too much into just one single, I simply offer that the signs are good. 8/10

The video is very retro and heart-warming, with a VHS style.
