Dead Naked Hippies thrashed into life in late 2016, birthing their ‘gritty yet pretty’ take on post-punk. Teaming up with producer Matt Peel (Eagulls, Pulled Apart By Horses) the Leeds Trio released their debut single ‘Lights Out’ and received heaps of praise from the likes of DIY and Louder Than War with the former saying of the band “They take twisting, sharp-as-a-knife guitar lines and wield them like a weapon. A statement of intent that sounds perfectly suited to both dingy basements and sun-kissed festival main stages”. The band recently tested the music magazine’s theory with a turn opening for Dream Wife at the Leeds date of their ‘DIY Presents’ tour.
To celebrate the release of their new single, Dead Naked Hippies will be starting their own night at Leeds’ Old Red Bus Station venue. ‘Dead Naked Hosts’ will be curated and hosted by the band on the 16th of March ahead of a performance at Live at Leeds Festival on the 29th of April.
Their contribution to the 4×12” Compilation is the Savages-esque ‘Drain You’. Three and a half minutes of moody, razor sharp rock that kick-starts this collection of music in the most perfect way.
The single forms a part of the first in a series of 4×12” compilations from Dance To The Radio Records. The Leeds label, who have released records from bands like iForward Russia! I Like Trains & Grammatics announced its return in 2016.
On working with Dance To The Radio, singer Lucy Jowett said “The Leeds music scene has a history of bands going against the grain and striving for difference and this release is giving us an opportunity to show we can join them. We want to push the scene as far as we can and DTTR share our belief.”
Dance To The Radio’s hugely influential Compilations have included singles from the likes of Pulled Apart By Horses, Esben & The Witch, Three Trapped Tigers, The Sunshine Underground, Sky Larkin, Paul Thomas Saunders and Das Racist. However, for Dance To The Radio, the focus is not on the past, but the future.
Sally Bryant, Dance To The Radio’s new A&R Representative explains why she chose Dead Naked Hippies to kick things off “Dead Naked Hippies are the perfect thrashy welcome to the DTTR compilation. This band are seriously tuned in to what’s going on in the scene around them and I’m excited for them to kick up a fuss.”
