Deerhoof today released “’Farewell’ Symphony,” the third new song from their forthcoming album Future Teenage Cave Artists.
The track’s video—a supercut of six performances of the last movement of Franz Joseph Haydn’s “’Farewell’ Symphony” edited by Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier – with Saunier explaining the namesake relation to the blistering Deerhoof original: “A dream that once each living thing is done in by capitalism, all of the dead reunite for one big final bow. Species of plants or animals, arts/educational/political systems meant to help people, and music scenes are all among the extinctions.” The creation of the album’s Jean-Michel Basquiat-inspired cover art was also detailed by Satomi Matsuzaki, who says, “We were talking about presenting a seemingly soon to be real apocalypse where humans destroy environments and natural habitats, triggered by global warming, and other probable events, such as the spread of invisible killers like disease and bacteria, the long battle of politics and religion that divide people, outdated traditional values, and the harm of technological advancement.”
Later today, the band will host a one-time-only virtual listening party of Future Teenage Cave Artists via a YouTube livestream, where fans can hear the album in full ahead of its May 29th release via Joyful Noise Recordings and chat with the band via Skype after the album’s completion. Tune-in at 4pm EST/1pm PST HERE.
“’Farewell’ Symphony” follows the album’s first two singles “Future Teenage Cave Artists” and “The Loved One.”
