Roskilde Festival bring Pussy Riot’s mother group VONIA (RU) and Iconic pop-art master Ron English (US) to Denmark as part of their 2013 ARTS programme.

Roskilde Festival is well known as one of the giants of the European festival scene for its heritage, scale and world-class music line-up’s, however, at Roskilde there’s a lot more to experience than just the music. As part of their ARTS programe, the festival has this year curated a living gallery of 100 exclusive projects incorporating live Installations, performances, architectural challenges and more for the festival’s residents to explore.

The ARTS programme is more than just an open window looking out onto the international art scene, it also a challenges the art-loving festival guests by introducing the latest trends across the genres of temporary art. Highlights from this year’s programme include:

VOINA (RUS) The mother group from which activists Pussy Riot originated, will be free to take festival guests as political prisoners. The word voina means war in Russian, and this peculiar art group bases their expressions upon the concept of war. They wage their war on the conformity within art and political motivated violations upon human rights.

Ron English (US) brings his consumer critical pop-art from the streets and facades of New York to a 90 Meter wall next to the event’s iconic Orange stage. Active since the 80’s, English is well known for his urban art in commercial spaces, such as buildings and shop fronts. He was also responsible for one of the iconic images from the 2008 Obama election campaign, Abraham Obama, in which he fused the images of the 16th, and soon to be, 44th presidential faces.

The Velvet State, a Twin Peak-like alternative reality in which festival goers can stray into one of several warped and wonderful worlds. Created by co-collaborators Fiction Pimps (DK), Collective Unconscious (UK) and SHJworks (DK), The Velvet State is a parallel universe where the audience can wander into one of several zones designed to challenge the bodies, minds and limits of participants. In the darkness they can stray into the girl´s room, the butchery or even face The Fetishist or The Killer, both of which promise to rouse desire, trauma and dreams…. We guarantee this is an experience exclusive Roskilde.

According to The Roskilde Festival art advisor Signe Brink Pedersen: “Experiencing art and performances at The Roskilde Festival is very different from visiting a museum, all though our selection matches even large and established exhibitions. The festival guests are extremely curious and outreaching which challenges the artists. This challenge options a possibility of active involvement and dialog – a quite rare possibility in artistic context”.

Roskilde Festival takes place from the 29th June to the 7th of July, A full festival ticket costs DKK 1890 (approx £217). A full festival ticket gives access to eight days of experiences and up to 200 music acts alongside a whole heap of creativity. Tickets are sold through Billetlugen.
