"Definitely file this one next to: Stuff You Can’t Fake" – American Songwriter
(June 27, 2012 – Toronto, ON) Dine Alone Records is proud to welcome powerhouse duo Shovels & Rope to their Canadian roster. The label will release O’ Be Joyful on July 31 in Canada. Watch the Album Trailer here: http://bit.ly/JHbf4v
Shovels & Rope consists of two artists with successful music careers prior to joining forces. Cary Ann Hearst is an acclaimed singer/songwriter who has been featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition and had her song “Hell Bells” used in HBO’s True Blood. Michael Trent is a celebrated solo artist and the former singer/guitarist of the band The Films.
The fusion of Hearst & Trent’s styles produce a sound that can best be described as an incendiary mix of rock, folk, edgy country, southern roots and a ton of heart. As a well-seasoned touring act, Shovels & Rope logged in over 200 dates in 2011 alone, winning over new fans while touring with Hayes Carl, Justin Townes Earle, Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, The Felice Brothers and Butch Walker, to name a few. Their live performances are captivating; due to the amount of passion and energy they exude. Using only their voices, a few old drums, and two guitars, the sound they generate on stage as a duo is bigger than many full bands. Do not be fooled though. This is no gimmick or novelty act. Shovels & Rope’s charismatic live performances are only matched by their exceptional songwriting.
O’ Be Joyful is a raw, honest, gritty and minimalist offering that packs a wallop with its pure energy, distinctive harmonies and stellar songwriting. Recorded in the twosome’s house, backyard and van, as well as various motel rooms across America, the 11-song set offers a compelling encapsulation of Hearst and Trent’s unique approach.
The autobiographical opening track, “Birmingham” is a beautiful springboard into the depths of O’ Be Joyful. Once in, the soulful harmonies of “The Keeper” and the revivalist title track grab a strong hold and pull you in deeper. “Kemba’s Got The Cabbage Moth Blues” is a speed-infused foot-stomping romp; the heartfelt “Lay Low” is a poignant duet, while the creeping “Ticking Bomb” oozes with raw sensuality. The elegiac tone of the album’s final track, “This Means War” serves as an appropriate and reflective closer to an album soaked in rhythm, passion and the fire that makes up O’ Be Joyful.
