Note to editor: Spear of Destiny

Spear are coming to Undercover Festivals Woking to perform the classic One Eyed Jacks album in full. With the exception of “These Days Are Gone”, “Playground of the Rich” and “Prisoner of Love”, all songs had been performed live by the original Spear of Destiny line-up for nearly a year prior to the recording of One Eyed Jacks. “Everything You Ever Wanted”, “Attica”, “Rainmaker”, “Young Men”, “Forbidden Planet” and “Don’t Turn Away” were introduced to live sets in March 1983, with “Young Men” going by the title of “Remembrance (Every Other Day)”. “Liberator” was introduced to live shows in the early summer of 1983. The final live performance of the original line-up of Spear of Destiny took place on 9 June 1983, followed by a television studio performance on 8 July.

August saw Spear of Destiny return to the stage, this time with the introduction of Dolphin Taylor on drums, Neil Pyzer on saxophone, piano, and organ, and John Lennard on saxophone. The new line-up featured a dramatic reworking of the songs that were to eventually become One Eyed Jacks, along with the introduction of “Playground of the Rich” and “Rosie”, a song that would later be featured as the b-side to the line up’s first recorded output, the single “Prisoner of Love”. A tour in November premiered “The Last Card”. Although it proceeded the release of One Eyed Jacks by six months, “The Last Card” would not be featured on a studio recording until the release of the “All My Love (Ask Nothing)” single in 1985. “Prisoner of Love” was added to the live set in December 1983 and would be released as the first single for the record in January 1984. By this time, John Lennard had left the band, replaced by Mickey Donnelly. The band also added Alan St Clair as a second guitarist. St Clair had previously worked for Kirk Brandon as a guitar technician.

The album remains a classic in Spear’s back catalogue and a firm fan favourite.35 years later Spear are back on tour celebrating the 35th anniversary of the album and they will be at The Fiery Bird Venue Woking Surrey Fri 13th September…

Towers of London

Towers of London are a band that wear their influences on their hearts. Their hedonistic reputation precedes them but they’ve grown into something more. The bands new dawn sees them back seeking to make a difference

Controversy followed Towers Of London everywhere… but with new management, a calmer outlook and a joyous, stadium-friendly new single, could their time have come at last?

When someone decides to write the definitive history of London glam punks Towers Of London, they’re not going to be short of material. There’s the fights, the reality TV series, that performance on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, the ban from Download Festival, the support slots with Guns N’ Roses, the fights with My Chemical Romance, singer Donny Tourette’s early escape from Celebrity Big Brother, and yes, the comebacks.

13 years on from their debut album ‘Blood Sweat & Towers’ the Towers Of London have reformed with the original line up with promise of a new album in 2019.

Menace

“Not all Punks are dead”

Menace were London’s first generation no-nonsense boot boys, pre-dating Sham 69 and Cockney Rejects who overtook them in terms of mass popularity.

They formed in 1976 at the Hope And Anchor in Islington who soon playing the Roxy. Their high-energy, unpretentious sets won them few admirers in the inkies e.g. the Press, but they swiftly built a strong following that brought together both punks and skinheads. They’re often cited as the first to unite this potentially volatile mix. However, there was nothing premeditated about the audience they attracted. “Sham were more overt in their leanings towards skinheads,” Martin told me. “We had that crossover thing. We liked that idea.” Partly because most of the band themselves were skinheads in their youth.Move forward to 2019

The current line up still has Noel with occasional appearances from Charlie. The core of Menace is Noel, Finn, Rob (originally in King Kurt) and Harvey

1919

“The band formed in December 1980 in Bradford and set about recording heavy, melodic, intense dance music with no frills and pretensions. The band were an early contributor to what became the Goth genre.” (Gods and Alchoves)

1919 had chart success with the singles “Caged”, “Repulsion” and “Cry Wolf”” as well as the 1984 LP “Machine”, and recorded two Peel Sessions. In 2014, founding guitarist Mark Tighe attempted to reform the band, recruiting Rio Goldhammer from the Leeds underground scene to perform vocals. In 2015, original drummer Mick Reed returned to the fray, providing the final piece of the puzzle in the form of bassist Karl Donner. With the band’s core reunited, the “‘Madness Continues’ Sessions” live-album quickly emerged, along with the self-released Death Note EP.

Two European tours and a host of festival appearances later, 1919 signed a deal with Westworld Recordings in 2016 to release a new album, “Bloodline”, 35 years after their first. But it was to be no fairytale. In January 2017 Tighe lost a short battle with cancer, leaving a chasm at the heart of the band. Having insisted the others carry on in his absence though, Mick, Rio, and Karl now had to do justice to the album, and to the memory of their fallen comrade.

In fact Undercover 2016 was the last gig for Mark and it is fitting that 1919 have become firm regulars at Undercover.

Bloodline was released to critical acclaim in 2017, with Vive le Rock’s Pete Woods writing “Good goths come to those that wait” in an 8/10 review. Louderthanwar said “‘Bloodline’ will bewitch you“, and Sonic Seducer calling its “nightmarish-hypnotic gloom” a “fitting tribute” to Tighe’s legacy. In April the band confirmed that Sam Evans would be their new full-time guitarist, and began touring the new album once again to rave reviews. As of October, the band played the last of 19 dates across Europe in Leeds. On 12 January 2018, Bloodline was released on limited edition red vinyl, featuring two additional tracks (“D.N.A” and “A Hymn to the Night”) recorded with Mark.

Wonk Unit

The Wonk are a very difficult band to describe they are punk but they have pretty much thrown all preconceived converntions to the wind, what you will get after their set is a warm glow and a huge grin.

“Wonk Unit are arguably the future of punk rock; I fully accept that that’s a bold statement, but having had ‘Nervous Racehorse’, the fourth full length album from the London outfit on rotation for the past week I feel they entirely justify the claim…” – Louder than war

“(Wonk Unit) have managed the almost impossible task of having found their own sound. It’s punk son, but not as we know it” – (Big Cheese)

“one of the most unique bands in modern punk rock.Wonk Unit are a fresh breath of life in the London punk scene. They’re fun, weird, poetic and utterly compelling all at once, a must-see.” (Art Rocker)
