DJ Harrison shares two new tracks, “Seek God” ft. Fly Anakin and “Recycled”

DJ Harrison began writing his new album ElectroSoul after an unexpected hospital stay. Making new music was the first step towards healing once he got home, and the songs he wrote quickly evolved into his latest album, ElectroSoul – his mostambitious record yet, featuring collaborations with artists from his Richmond, VA community and beyond.

DJ Harrison aka Devonne Harris invited Pink Siifu, Yazmin Lacey, Fly Anakin, Angélica Garcia, Miguel-Atwood Ferguson, Kiefer, Nigel Hall and many more to create the album’s distinct sound, which travels slickly through lo-fi hiphop to indie rock via jazz, funk and R&B.

Following on from “Stay Ready” with Yaya Bey is a new double single. Side A, “Seek God”, features guest vocals from Devonne’s longtime collaborator, rapper and musician Fly Anakin. The video, filmed at Devonne’s home and studio Jellowstone – where he made most of ElectroSoul – sees Devonne and other album collaborators including Sound Genesius hang out together. “Recycled” on the B-side was one of the first songs he wrote for ElectroSoul and symbolizes the awakening of new energy after his time in hospital.

Throughout the entirety of his catalog, Devonne has always found a way to celebrate Richmond’s history, its culture, its nature, and most importantly his Richmond-based family. Fly Anakin is a co-founder of Richmond hip-hop crew Mutant Academy and the city is his former home, while members of Devonne’s band Butcher Brown still live in the city, and make up several of the instrumentalists on the LP. “There’s a special thing about working with people from your hometown,” says Fly Anakin. “Devonne is one of those people that make music feel homemade. Literally every element is warming to the soul. Real deal oven music, no microwave, air fryer bullshit.”

Devonne has worked with many artists through his career including Jack White, Freddie Gibbs, Steve Arrington, Joyce Wrice and Kurt Elling – receiving a GRAMMY nomination for the latter’s album SuperBlue. As DJ Harrison, he’s released three albums on Stones Throw – HazyMoods, Tales from the Old Dominion, and his covers LP Shades of Yesterday. His new album ElectroSoul is out in January!
