Enter, Dora Jar. Born in New York but raised in California, Dora was brought up by her actress mum and translator dad to the kind of childhood that feels unconventional, except to all those inside it. Attending a religious school (while questioning her own faith) and finding it hard to focus academically, she began something of a double-life that few knew the story behind. Her partner in all this was her sister, Lueza: unable to walk and talk, the sisters communicated almost telepathically for years, spending their time taking long wheelchair trips around town, watching movies and always playing music in the house. Dora vividly remembers, at four years old, pushing her sister’s wheelchair behind the stage at a benefit concert for The Bridge School, a special educational establishment set up by Peggy and Neil Young, and realising that making music was all she wanted to do.
All of this, in its own way, manifests itself in Dora Jar’s debut single, ‘Did I Get It Wrong?’ Produced by Felix Joseph (Pa Salieu, Jorja Smith), the track assimilates some of the key influences on Dora’s life into atmospheric, emotionally potent pop: from the rebel-streak of Gwen Stefani and the elastic vocals of Regina Spektor to the alternative rock of Foo Fighters (who also played at The Bridge School), and Outkast’s languid 90s hip-hop. “It’s funny that my first release is me questioning myself,” Dora Jar says. “I guess my intention is to purge all my worry from the start. If ignoring it means being ignorant then I want to face shit head on, and know myself.” The striking video to ‘Did I Get It Wrong?’ transforms that lyrical paranoia into a playful but quietly political statement about growing up in an age of constant surveillance, but not really understanding anybody any better. “I’m really interested in the way we as people are unrelatable to each other. I observe people trying to connect through ways that they are similar to someone else, but I’ve found that my most intimate connections with others stems from being curious about the ways our lives are totally different.”
‘Did I Get It Wrong?’ sees Dora Jar arrive a fully-formed artist, and one who appears as openly honest as she is full of possibilities. She cut her Polish family name in half to form her pseudonym, recognising after Lueza’s passing the need to sing, dance and make the most of the absolute privilege of health. “I want to leave the door ajar in my imagination,” she concludes. “Let light seep in through the crack.” For a talent like Dora Jar, ultimately all you have to do is step through.
