Earlier this year we released SOL, the sophomore album from Dreamweapon that saw the Porto outfit make a departure from their song-based earlier material and enter the world of improvised krautrock/drone to simply mind-blowing effect. Having recently toured the album around Europe the band are now sharing a brand new video for ‘Qram’, a fifteen-minute jam taken off the LP.
‘Qram’ is undeniably one of the stand-out tracks from the album, capturing all of the record’s dimensions in one darkly atmospheric and cerebral listen. It opens with a wash of feedback, eerie bell chimes and creaking strings before a never-ending motorik bassline breaks through and leads the song from its ambient beginnings into a totally hypnotic piece of space-rock that sure-as-hell proves that Dreamweapon exist in a league of their own when it comes to the minimal-is-maximal mantra. Now with fittingly cosmic visuals, it makes for a seriously mesmerising audio-visual experience.
Dreamweapon take their name from the 1990 Spacemen 3 live album ‘Dreamweapon: An Evening of Contemporary Sitar Music’, who themselves took inspiration from the work of minimalist drone – or ‘Dream Music’ – visionary La Monte Young and a 1965 multimedia piece titled ‘Rites of The Dreamweapon’ by original The Velvet Underground drummer Angus MacLise. Fast-forward to 2018 and Dreamweapon, the band, are continuing to keep the torch burning – perfectly embodying the timeless mantras of less is always more and psychedelia as constantly-evolving pastiche.
Made up of 10,000 Russos bassist Andre Couto, João Campos Costa and Edgar Moreira, Dreamweapon emerged in 2009 and have since gone on to release one EP, their debut S/T album and a handful of singles, whilst taking their immersive and unremitting live show around Europe. Made up of four improvised compositions recorded in one take at their Porto practice space, on February 16thth Dreamweapon released their sophomore LP ‘SOL’ on London imprint Fuzz Club Records, which was succeeded by a run of tour-dates around the UK and Europe.
