Whilst sifting through various emails, Earth Experiments debut release caught my searching eye. Key words, most noticeably ‘funky bass’ and ‘blues guitar’, rendered me curious. The album was mastered by Pete Maher, who has previously worked with Jack White and The Rolling Stones. The EP, named ‘People (It’s Time To Change)’ will be released on Phonogreen Music on the 27th of October.
The first track, ‘People (It’s Time To Change)’, opens with jazzy drums and an organ. It is clear from the start Earth Experiment are very 60’s orientated, with plenty of psychedelic components. Jazz instruments play incognito with distorted guitars, beneath clear and resonating vocals. This track marks the album out as a supremely good one, especially noted in the guitar solo and Yusef Lateef style flute. ‘Astral Holiday’ sets out the funk basis of the EP. Powerful vocals, not overcomplicated, are full-stopped by organ intermissions. Following on with the psychedelic-spiritual themes, ‘Live For Today’ has a Beatles persona. Acoustic guitar is lightly picked in the background. Jazz instruments again play against the organ and a piano. The final song, ‘Sunset Song’, uses Calypso guitar over the top of acoustic guitar, giving a laidback and simplistic feel. It is an excellent song, marking the end of an excellent release.
This has, in my opinion, the potential to be the EP of the year. In its short span, ‘People (It’s Time To Change)’ has produced in me an immediate liking for the band. They encompass a wide variety of genres; jazz, rock, blues, Indian elements such as the flute. What’s more, all of these factors sound together in perfect unison. Earth Experiment is a band to be kept an eye on. 9/10
