Canadian electronic duo HUMANS have just announced their third full-length album, titled ‘Going Late’, which is slated for release on November 16 and shares their brand new single and video, titled, ‘Breakfast With Liz’ today via Haven Sounds. The video for ‘Breakfast With Liz’ has already won an award for Best Music Video at the Leo Awards 2018, the perfect visual accompaniment to HUMANS’ exciting new single. This release follows on from HUMANS’ recent single, “Still About You” and last EP ‘The Water Water EP’, which saw premiere support from The Fader, Pigeons & Planes and Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, the video of which was nominated for Best MuchFact Video at the 2016 MMVAs. With a sound that suits any kind of venue, HUMANS have also been dominating the live music scene, with notable appearances at acclaimed festivals including SXSW, Coachella, The Great Escape, CMJ, Mad Decent Block Party, Beach Goth Festival and various others as well as touring with big names Flight Facilities, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Sleepy Tom, Sweater Beats, Young Empires and loads more.
The new LP was made with the help of Nik Kozub and features Grammy-winning producer Carlos De La Garza on album track ‘Still About You’ as well as So Loki for vocals on the track ‘RUN’. The duo’s debut LP, ‘Noontide’, also saw great success around the world and landed HUMANS a Juno nomination for 2015’s Electronic Album of the Year. This pair of musicians have been making waves with their pop-inspired indie electronic sounds and have gained support from an impressive list of tastemaker publications such as Resident Advisor, XLR8R, Interview Magazine and many more. On top of their EP and LP releases, HUMANS have also produced and released the musical score for Peter Ricq’s 2017 theatrical motion picture ‘Dead Shack’, which premiered at Sitges, NIFFF, Fantasia, VIFF and Morbido Film Fest, to name a few.
The HUMANS duo is made up of Vancouver locals Robbie Slade and Peter Ricq and is not easily boxed into one genre; HUMANS take inspiration from an eclectic variety of sources, citing some of their influences as Fleetwood Mac, young Elton John, Marvin Gaye, Young Fathers, Lee Fields, Detroit Swindle, Mall Grab, Abjo, LA Priest, Soft Hair, Mount Kimbie, LCD Soundsystem, Animal Collective, Ty Segall and Steve Lacy. Using crisp modern minimalist beats paired with chilled-out vocals, HUMANS’ sound could best be compared directly to indie electronic giants RÜFÜS DU SOL, Amtrac and Bob Moses, as well as Maribou State’s chilled but danceable sounds.
The newest single by HUMANS perfectly progresses between bassy instrumental moments and sultry vocal verses, all tied together with crisp claps that make you want to move your body. ‘Breakfast With Liz’ could fill dance-floors but doesn’t revert to the overdone doof-doof of mainstream dance music; instead, HUMANS have shown their versatility once again by producing a track that could accompany a laid-back cocktail at sunset but still cuts as deep as a dance banger. Peter Ricq showcases his talent, not only as a musician, but as an exceptional filmmaker with the music video for ‘Breakfast With Liz’. What strikes you first when watching the carefully crafted visuals is the attention to detail, in the colour grading, lighting and framing. Technical aspects aside, the video provides a simple yet captivating storyline with a mystery woman taking part in a sensual dance rendezvous in a run-down laundromat, and shows how HUMANS’ ‘Breakfast With Liz’ can be perfect for anything from grinding up against a washing machine to seducing police officers.
On ‘Breakfast With Liz’, Robbie comments, “This song is about bouncing around from party to party in the rain. A thing that often happens to the youth of Vancouver, thanks to our thriving underground scene. As these nights can get somewhat out of hand, the simple refrain is a mantra to help keep one grounded.”
On the music video for the new single Peter explains how they, “Wanted to produce a video that has numerous HUMANS qualities represented in it; like fun storytelling, strong female protagonist, dance choreography, uncontrollable urges, animation, day dreaming, rebels, love, lost souls and more. This was the most challenging video to date and when your mother says “I watched it, it’s not for me” you know you did it right… we’ve achieved our goal.”
