Praise for Ellie O’Neill
“Songs such as Little Sister, Silent Water, Half Immune and Seabird gracefully join the dots between Judee Sill and Laura Marling” The Irish Times 4/5
“Across ten intimate yet exploratory folk songs – woven together with coiling acoustic guitars and muffled pianos – the Meath singer-songwriter navigates memory, love, loss and self-discovery through the non-linear lens of queer temporality” Anois, Os Ard
“Ellie O’Neill’s technique is just as dazzling, but her songs have a darker tint, littered with broken bones and emergencies both physical and emotional” Uncut
“Percussive guitar paired with cyclical lyrics express how grief and love can untether the subconscious – see Little Sister, a love song with real hair, teeth and nails intimacy” 8/10 MOJO
“In songs such as “Anna with the Silver Arrow” and “Peter’s Song”, she will meander surrealistically for a while, before snapping suddenly into these moments of melodic and emotional clarity that pin you to the wall” The Line Of Best Fit
“Every song sits in conversation with itself, her deep finger-picked guitar straight from the Leonard Cohen songbook, swapping avalanche for oblivion” The Independent
“Reveals its charms over time” The Times 4/5
“Rooted in a very specific locality, ‘Time Of Fallow’ broadens its scope to become something universal. A wonderful experience, Ellie O’Neill’s debut album should be treasured” Clash 8/10
“There’s a kind of poetry etched into the fabric of the song, like lay lines cutting through a landscape. Gossamer vocals hold a quiet power and propel the song forward, running in parallel to the gentle guitar lines” So Young
Since its release earlier this year, Ellie O’Neill’s Time of Fallow has been quietly making waves, drawing listeners in with its emotional depth and O’Neill’s singular voice. The album is today available on limited-edition vinyl via Bandcamp, with O’Neill also announcing a run of in-store performances to support the release, including dates in Dublin, Limerick and London. O’Neill recently performed for the revered Anam Sessions at Emo Court, the acclaimed series presented in partnership with Other Voices and the Office of Public Works. Watch here.
In the vein of some of Ireland’s greatest talents, Sinéad O’Connor and Dolores O’Riordan, Ellie is a singer and songwriter of astonishing purity. Time of Fallow resists the language of arrival; it is a patient, ongoing practice of sifting through the store of memory. O’Neill uses repetition as a form of truth-telling, yielding to the constant loop of lived reality rather than a fabricated arc. If Time of Fallow begins in the riverbed, it ends at the mouth of it, where everything loosens and finally lets go.
A luminous and deeply introspective body of work, Time of Fallow is matched by O’Neill’s remarkable live presence. Those who have seen her perform alongside the likes of Adrianne Lenker, John Francis Flynn, @, Junior Brother and Tucker Zimmerman can attest to her dazzling technique. On stage, she instinctively leans into the lower registers, holding her guitar high and close to feel its resonance through her body. Following a run of sold-out dates across London and Ireland, she has also confirmed a new suite of UK shows, including The Lexington in November and a slot at Latitude Festival.
