Flyying Colours Share new video ‘Big Mess’

New album ‘Fantasy Country’ announced for Summer 2020

released by Club AC30 and Poison City Records

“A heady balm of smeared guitar textures and sharp pop” – Stereogum “The type of gut-punch shoegaze that’s bound to appeal to many” – The Line of Best Fit “Sparse and ethereal in sound but with a harsh, cutting edge reminiscent of Seattle’s finest from the late eighties/early nineties” – Drowned in Sound

Australian quartet Flyying Colours are set to make a storming return with their second album ‘Fantasy Country’, and have released the video for their gloriously ethereal, upbeat new single ‘Big Mess’, which showcases their impeccable duel vocals and pop sensibility. They tell us that “Big Mess was one of the first tracks written for the record after finishing our last set of major touring. It became somewhat of a representation of what it was like at the time for us being away and coming home. Everything was a bit crazy and a bit messy in our lives… relationships change (all different kinds) as life changes and that is kind of what the song is about. I like it as it feels very much like the songs I used to write in high school, which is funny. It was the first song we started working on and one of the most difficult to really get it to sound the way it did in my head. After playing Big Mess live as a band for a while before recording I think we are all very excited to release it to the world.” Founders Brümmer and Gemma O’Connor quickly became mainstays of the thriving Melbourne shoegaze scene in 2013, and joined by bassist Melanie Barbaro and drummer Andy Lloyd Russell they released two critically acclaimed EPs and debut album ‘Mindfullness’.

The band have toured with The Jesus & Mary Chain, Johnny Marr, The Black Angels, Brian Jonestown Massacre, A Place To Bury Strangers, Pinkshinyultrablast and many more, as well as headlining their own international dates. They’ve received heavy rotation on radio stations worldwide, including KEXP, BBC 6Music, JJJ, RRR and FBi. They hit #47 on the CMJ Radio top 200 in the states, sat in the UK’s Amazing Radio charts for weeks, and have been championed by NME, The 405, Stereogum, Wonderland, The Line Of Best Fit, Drowned In Sound, Clash Magazine and more. The recording of their expansive new LP ‘Fantasy Country’ was an exhaustive one and they admit to not knowing if it would ever see completion. Slaving over guitar sounds and taking time to experiment with new techniques and effects above a shopfront on Sydney Road, they worked to create just the right tone for their anticipated follow-up. “I feel like you can hear the welcome struggle in the songs sometimes” we’re told, “but that could just be me”.
