We are thrilled to announce the release of Ghostpoet’s newest LP Some Say I So Say Light, to be released in the US on September 24th via Play It Again Sam/[PIAS] America. Industrial beats, sonorous piano lines and hyper-detailed ornamentation provide a backdrop for Obaro Ejimiwe, AKA Ghostpoet, an artist who sounds ever more like a man old before his time, whether intoning words so laconically it’s virtually spoken word or croaking out sung melodies.
Some Say I So Say Light is the second full length release of Ghostpoet’s, following 2010’s Mercury Prize-nominated Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam. But throughout, even when it plays second fiddle to the invention of the sounds, Ghostpoet’s lyrical voice is the compelling thread running through all of his albums.
At times, Ghostpoet’s vocals seem to deliberately recede into the flickering shadows of the music, though this doesn’t lessen their gravitas in the slightest. The lyrics that come through are as rooted in everyday life as ever, though: from unopened mail to takeaway meals, Ghostpoet is never less than completely identifiable. It’s an album that positions him in the tradition of modern British auteurs as interested in pushing the boundaries sonically as expressing cathartic feelings, from Tricky to The Streets.
Ghostpoet’s latest video for the track ‘Cold Win’ was partly shot in Iceland, bringing a nomadic feel to the song and utilizing images of wide open roads and endless landscapes. Directed by Cyrille de Vignemont, Ghostpoet is featured as a character unwilling to hit the road and to leave his life behind. Raindrops come together to form hobo symbols, a series of characters used by the rootless vagabonds who appeared in the USA at the beginning of the 20th century to communicate below the radar of civilized society. Guided by a sensorial narrative, an atmospheric mood gradually develops in the middle of those infinite landscapes, beautifully complimenting the song. Watch the video below –
