Giant X – ‘I’ (Steamhammer / SPV)

The debut album ‘I’ from ‘Giant X is currently being released worldwide between 18th January and 22nd January depending where in the world you happen to live. Despite the staggered release dates there is plenty to get excited about with this band formed by rock veterans Rolf Kasparek and Peter Jay Jordan. Peter had this to say about the project:

“Our material consists of consciously multi-layered numbers, more in the tradition of Kiss, Queen, Billy Talent, Thin Lizzy and Van Halen, in other words: rock music in the tradition of the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties – our shared musical roots. The main thing for us was that people would be able hear the lightness and spontaneity of our collaboration. Giant X have a broader musical range which allows Rolf and myself to present ourselves from a totally different side. The album unmistakably focuses on Rolf’s voice and our typical guitars, both in a way which people have rarely heard from us.”

‘I’ is a wonderful step back in time to the heyday of hair metal and classic rock where the electric guitar solo riff was king and perms really were sexy. From the slightly cheesy b-movie inspired opening this album is oodles of fun. There are silly songs like ‘The Count’ and epic ballads like ‘Nameless Heroes’ as well as some heavy floor fillers like ‘Badland Blues’ but all are of the highest quality. This album has the likability factor in bag loads and really does bring a smile to your face. So go on put on your tightest faded jeans, dig out your band shirt and leather jacket, and rock out old school style. 8.4/10
