TRACK FOLLOWS HER DEBUT SINGLE, “SOMETIMES (BACKWOOD),” WHICH HAS AMASSED OVER 50 MILLION STREAMS ON SPOTIFY
Breakout artist gigi returns with “The Man” – the first song from her forthcoming debut project, due out on Mogul Vision/Interscope Records. Accompanied by languid acoustic guitars and poignant strings and keyboards, gigi’s distinctive, nuanced vocals shine on the song, a bittersweet reflection on a faded romance. She wrote “The Man” with GRAMMY®-winning producer Jennifer Decilveo (MARINA, Miley Cyrus, Angelique Kidjo), who also produced. “Working with Jenn was incredible. It was my first writing session and there was a natural and instant comfortability I felt with her,” says gigi. “ I think this song takes on many different meanings, centered around the idea of acknowledging the standard of what being a man is today and questioning what that even means. As two queer people, Jenn and I both share similar experiences when it comes to that standard hovering over us in all the different ways gender expectations do. This song is an acknowledgment of guilt, shame, sarcasm, resentment, indifference, and freedom. It just depends which way you’re feeling when you listen to it.”
The official video for “The Man” follows a lone figurine on a journey from a dry, gray riverbed to a joyously flowing creek. Directed by Open The Portal (Gucci Mane, P!NK, Eminem) and Amber Padgett, the clip captures the yearning and mystery of the song through a mixture of animation and vibrant time-lapse photography of striking natural settings. Committed to exploring the raw imperfections of life through her music, Florida-based indie singer-songwriter gigi makes organic, acoustically driven music distinguished by clever lyricism and immersive storytelling. After growing up in West Palm Beach, FL, she studied at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and played indie showcases with her band, Wendy Lane, in Brooklyn.
In January 2021, she shared a video of herself performing her first solo song, “Sometimes (Backwood),” on TikTok. Other TikTok creators took note and began using the song in their videos. The same kind of organic discovery took place after she released the song on DSPs the next month. Within three weeks, “Sometimes (Backwood)” had been added to 310 fan-created Spotify playlists. Soon afterward, it appeared on major playlists like Chill Vibes, Bedroom Pop and Fresh & Chill and hit #1 on Spotify’s U.S. Viral chart. Streams on the platform topped 18 million by August 2021 and have now surpassed 50 million.
Hailing gigi as “one of Gen Z’s breakout artists,” Medium said, “[‘Sometimes (Backwood)’] is a torrent of raw emotion…people on TikTok grabbed this song, and stacked their own emotions on top of it. It helped them communicate something that they couldn’t quite tell on their own. That’s what music does best…Let’s see what gigi does next.” Listen to “Sometimes (Backwood)” HERE.
