Following the release of last year’s critically acclaimed debut Up To Anything, Aussie trio The Goon Sax announce that they’re returning to the UK to play The Great Escape, with some more dates in May and June, including Mono in Glasgow and The Hare & Hounds in Birmingham. They’ll also be supporting Whitney at The Ritz in Manchester and playing with TOPS at The Tufnell Park Dome, with further shows in Europe (full dates below).
The Goon Sax are Louis Forster, James Harrison and Riley Jones, who make pop music. They have refined tastes – they love The Pastels, Talking Heads, Galaxie 500, Bob Dylan and Arthur Russell. On their debut album Up To Anything they pull off the almost impossible, capturing the awkwardness, self-doubt and visceral excitement of teenage life, while still in the thick of actually living it.
The band formed at high school in 2013 when James and Louis began workshopping song ideas in James’ bedroom. Riley joined in early 2014, after a month of drum lessons, and the band played their first show a few months later.
Chapter signed The Goon Sax in 2015 on the strength of an unsolicited demo, the first time that has ever happened in the label’s history. Whilst the singles “Sometimes Accidentally” and “Boyfriend” were featured on the likes of Stereogum, NME, BBC 6 Music and Brooklyn Vegan, their album Up to Anything garnered a 5* review in The Guardian, 4*s in Mojo, 9/10 in The Line of Best Fit as well as a two page feature in Loud & Quiet and coverage in Uncut, Pitchfork and the NME as well as an inclusion in The Observer Music Monthly‘s 20 Bands Under 20 feature. They also made End of Year Best Of lists including Rough Trade shops, BBC 6 Music, Billboard, Out.com and Mic.com.
“It is a deceptively difficult trick, to capture the humanity and irregularities of music in a way that does not feel cloying, but over 12 tracks on their debut album Brisbane’s the Goon Sax manage it again, and again, and again. This is some kind of wonderful.” Guardian 5*s
“This is pop music as it should be: simple, unvarnished, young but not world-weary, and ultimately timeless.” The Line of Best Fit 9/10
“Brisbane trio navigates teen psychodramas with the sort of wry reportage that makes Courtney Barnett such a charming indie narrator.” Mojo 4*s
“Some of the most brilliantly, brutally adolescent pop music to emerge in a very long time.” Loud and Quiet 8/10
“Aussie newcomers the Goon Sax excel in excruciatingly real, smart, self-deprecating lyrics about humdrum broken heart-related anxieties in post-adolescence. Think Parquet Courts meets Talking Heads meets devastating, crushingly aching longing.” Stereogum
“Hints of Galaxie 500 and The Pastels abound, and…the feel of something Edwyn Collins might have wandered into back in his Postcard days.” NME
