Italian composer and artist Guido Affini takes the post-rock, noise, and ambient genres and meshes it into something new and truly unique. At a glance, what might seem like art installations filled with guitars and alternative riffs are really compositions created with an esoteric sensibility. This esoteric sensibility takes listeners on a journey, blasting their senses with gauzy and other-worldly elements, and distilling their auditory reaches with fantastical imagery.

With his latest single, “Lulla By [Modulo#5 Vs.] ft. Fantuz” Affini brings a bit of theater into the realm of music. His latest creation is a soundtrack created for “Nothing,” a Shakespearean show by the ballet theater company Balletto Civile/Michela Lucenti. Joining forces with guitarist and producer Federico Fantuz, together the two combine electronics with modular synths and the startling sounds of the guitar. The result is something truly unexpected, hinting at ambient washes with electronic and post-rock soundscapes unfolding.

On “Lulla By,” some ambient sounds crawl through. The sounds evoke images of light and shadow. The synths flow through the speakers, sounding very atmospheric. Strands of guitars riff across this soundscape. The sounds beguile you to listen closely. The vibes undulate, with wave after wave cresting to the invisible shoreline. The guitar riffs underline this track, glistening like starlight in the soundwaves. The sounds pander to all things innate and I invite you to close your eyes and listen to this with headphones on to get the full cinematic experience.

Affini has truly done the impossible with his latest release, “Lulla By.” He shows us though pessimists say there might be nothing new under the sun, there are still variations and territory we still have yet to explore. With his explorations with ambient, electronic and guitar music, Affini demonstrations, there are many things we can still expect from him. His music proves to be flawless, creating atmosphere and a type of ambience many of us will want to revisit again and again. 7/10
