Today sees Welsh-born, London-based rising star Hana Lili share her brand new EP Existential, along with its titular track. The EP includes previous singles ‘Solitude’, ‘Burden’ and ‘Common Ground’, and ushers in a new era of Hana’s sound. Hana explains, “The EP follows the evolution of being happy with my own solitude. It’s a chronological journey and it’s an honest account from the stark loneliness of the summer months, reconnecting with friends, fixing relationships, learning to be alone and questioning everything, even our existence. Writing songs has always been an outlet for me, and feels more like a need than a want to write songs.”
Speaking about the track ‘Existential’, Hana says: “”Existential’ is a song about having a crisis, how the world works and the overwhelming feelings and emotions that creates. “I sleep with the sound on” as a distraction to try and block out the noise in my head so eventually I can sleep, and forget about it all. Writing this song helped me refocus on those smaller steps, and forget about the overwhelming bigger picture that I have no control over”.
Immensely proud of her heritage, Hana Lili grew up in a small seaside town on the south west coast of Wales. It was there she was able to forge her musical identity, taking part in local and international folk singing competitions where she learnt the tradition of telling stories through song. These formative experiences permeate through Hana Lili’s music and she gravitates towards writing about personal experiences, hardships, relationships and friendships. Like a diary to the inner monologue in her head, her tracks are honest and candidly authentic.
Existential follows Hana’s debut EP Flowers Die In The Summer, an entirely self-produced body of work which saw Hana deliver a dreamy introduction to her sonic world, combining intimate, confessional lyrics over immaculate self-taught production. Spearheaded by Hana’s unique ear for melody, rugged guitar chords, vulnerable lyrics, and nostalgic noughties-esque pop production, the homespun EP certified the 21-year-old as a vital new voice within the bedroom pop movement. With early press support from The Guardian, Notion, Dummy, i-D, Clash, Dork and The Line of Best Fitand an unexpected play on last year’s series of Love Island, Hana Lili is your latest artist to watch.
