Happyness – ‘Tunnel Vision On Your Part’ EP (Out Sept 23 via Moshi Moshi Records)
Happyness firm up their recent return to the music fray on this occasion, in the form on new EP called ‘Tunnel Vision On Your Part’, due September 23rd through Moshi Moshi Records. Current single ‘Anna, Lisa Calls’ is first up here as the EP opener, with the band saying; “This is our first phone call song and our 5th song in E major. We wrote it one day in the studio in June and recorded it straight away – I think we were going for a kind of Traveling Wilburys thing. Also we felt like we hadn’t put a synth in a song for a while, so there’s a synth.” All delivered in a lush harmonic slacker-tinged vocal, pinned by guitars at the fore. The slightly lighter feel continues with ‘Friend Of The Revolution’ in healthy supporting role.
The 5-tracker spurts an album fave in ‘SB’s Truck’, Happyness in homage to Samuel Beckett, who famously used to give the beloved, late, 80’s wrestler André The Giant lifts to school in his truck, owing to him being too large for his dad’s car. A more 1960’s sub-surf opening complete with tape hiss, ‘Surfer Girl; is sweet n’all, but still wish more musicians were more aware of alt surf even took a music trip which would take in Dick Dale, some of the B52’s, Cramps and Man Or Astroman? least in the surf front, just to add a bit of colour or, grit or drama. As it is, the title and last track ‘Tunnel Vision On Your Part’ continues the harmony rich release in all in good form, if a smidgen too safe and nice for the likes of me, but doubtless, it will satisfy the many. 7.7/10
