New York City based indie pop outfit herMajesty draws inspiration from artists including David Bowie and Arcade Fire. Its new single “Weightless” paints a romantic picture with a post-disco backbeat and a classic musical arrangement that invokes a lush, cinematic vibe with its soaring refrain “Weightless, we are weightless” that announces itself as a pop anthem for these uncertain times. The track was written over the course of four years and recorded in locations across the globe: Brooklyn; Rochester, New York; Cleveland; Athens, Greece; Wellington, New Zealand and mixed in Berlin by Giovanni Nicoletta (My Brightest Diamond, Apparat). “Weightless” is a paean on life, love, and death and its lyrics touch on the limitations that we impose on ourselves, and our capacities to live intimate, loving lives. These limitations (concrete walls) keep us isolated and our desire for love just out of reach. The lyrics suggest that letting go may feel as though it places us in peril but we must do so in order to experience intimacy and love. There is an allusion to the “ultimate” letting go in the “icy clothe”, “mourning chimes”, and “fading sun” and its refrain of “we are weightless,” is an allegory to the unbearable lightness of being. 7.8/10
