Today, the jangle pop oddballs Her’s share ‘Under Wraps’, the fourth and final single from their forthcoming debut album proper “Invitation To Her’s” due on the 24th of August.
In contrast to previous singles which paint vivid pictures of playful characters, the band suggest this song is “one that we hold near and dear, dedicated to someone who’s very close to us, in the hopes of helping them on the way to happiness. It’s a tune you can appreciate your loved ones to!”
With previous single “Low Beam” exploring toxic masculinity through the eyes of a biker and more recently “Harvey” an ode to a “six-foot, three-and-a-half-inch tall invisible rabbit”, “Under Wraps” is the final song on “Invitation To Her’s” and sounds apart from anything else on the album. Stephen Fitzpatrick’s louche croon evokes a fragility and tenderness in a way that is never far away from the oddball humour found throughout Her’s’ catalogue, but at its most sincere.
In today’s politically charged climate it can all-too-often feel like withdrawal isn’t an option. For duo Audun Laading and Stephen Fitzpatrick, withdrawal into a strange world of their mutual creation is central to their output. Through laughter and art, Her’s take us away from the strife of everyday life and into a world that’s a surreal reflection of our own, built from the detritus of novelty items in junk shops, bargain bin b-movies and late night cop shows.
After meeting in a university canteen in Liverpool, the duo from two different coastlines (Stephen from Barrow and Audun from another small coastal town in Norway) quickly bonded over their mutually off-kilter sense of humour. As their 2017 compilation Songs For Her’s demonstrated, their knack for world building out of the strange and the novel has been carefully refined over their short tenure together, to the point where they now stand as the British figureheads of an international DIY scene that’s exploding while retaining its UK grassroots authenticity.
“Songs For Her’s” set the bar high and introduced legions of supporters to their cause, with multiple songs blowing up on YouTube channels and Spotify and a whole host of publications like FADER, Wonderland, Guardian, Dork, DIY, NME, The Line of Best Fit, The 405. ‘Invitation To Her’s’ will continue the work that their early material started and is being met with a glowing reception. In their four star review Q described the album as “fusing Scritti Pollitti’s twinkling, slinky grooves with the luminous lugubriousness of Orange Juice to create something that’s feels distinctly theirs”.
Her’s are purveyors of a style that has not only shaped the very texture of Liverpool’s music, alongside peers like Trudy and the Romance and Pizzagirl, it’s a style that’s causing powerful ripples across the world. Under the facade and strange world of characters and humour there lies a deeper undercurrent, this approach is one of the subtle reasons Her’s stand apart and through this vehicle their messages have the potential to shift perceptions.
Her’s have very little to prove, and as any of their fans could tell you, they knew it from the start.
New single “Under Wraps” is out now and debut album “Invitation To Her’s” follows on the 24th of August on Heist Or Hit.
