His Clancyness Announces Signing To Fat Cat

Streams New Track From ‘Charade EP’ Out 20th May

Also supporting Deerhunter and Widowspeak throughout Europe in May

Following on from a blazing run at SXSW, His Clancyness is delighted to announce his signing to Fat Cat Records. The debut record for the prestigious Brighton-based label will be the ‘Charade EP’, set for release on limited edition cassette and mp3 on the 20th May, right in the middle of UK and European support tours for Deerhunter and Widowspeak. More details on the live shows, including London’s Cargo on the 28th May, are below.

A heady mix of breezy Americana and tightly wound krautrock, His Clancyness, the moniker for Canadian maverick Jonathan Clancy’s compositions, simultaneously bring to mind contemporary artists as diverse as Kurt Vile and Lower Dens but are delivered with the ease and flair of a songwriter totally confident in his own singular vision.

The first track taken from the EP, ‘Machines’, premiered on Ad Hoc and No Fear Of Pop last night. Hear it here via a wry take on the lyrics video, inspired by the ‘Hitchcock presents’ intros:

The ‘Charade EP’ release utilises the tape format to place the future and the past of His Clancyness neatly side by side. Side A consists of two tracks from the stunning forthcoming full-length ‘Vicious’: it’s a bold, confident album that exceeds expectations and transcends the initial wave of hype that surrounded His Clancyness. Side B collects together the bedroom recordings that were met with the aforementioned wave of excitement from tastemaker sites such as Pitchfork and Gorilla Vs. Bear, taken from the self-produced 2010 release ‘Always Mist’.

Showcasing the impressive songwriting ability that Jonathan Clancy has demonstrated since the start of the project, opening EP track ‘Safe Around the Edges’ is an intelligent pop song that encapsulates the His Clancyness sound perfectly and leads us on an evocative hook-filled journey throughout the six tracks.

The EP in cassette form will be available on the merch desk during His Clancyness’ shows supporting high-profile tours with Deerhunter and Widowspeak. This live match couldn’t be more perfect: two very different artists which His Clancyness also shares genetic material with, recalling the former’s love of a motorik beat and the nostalgic romanticism of the latter. Now based in Bologna, by way of Ottawa, His Clancyness, initially solo and now with a full band, has built up a large following since 2009 and honed the live show throughout countless tours in mainland Europe. The recently well-received SXSW and headline shows in New York can only further this reputation and ready the world for His Clancyness’ rightful ascendence.

The new album, ‘Vicious’, is set for release sometime in Autumn, as recorded in Detroit last summer with producer Chris Koltay (Atlas Sound, Lotus Plaza, Akron Family, Dirtbombs, Liars).
