Hailing from Durham, North Carolina, M.C. Taylor—Hiss Golden Messenger—has been writing some of the most highly regarded folk-rock/Americana music of the last decade, all the while remaining firmly planted outside the confines of the most recent folk-pop revival. Past Hiss Golden Messenger records have found Taylor grappling with questions of faith, addiction, honesty, and the existential dilemmas of growing older (if not wiser). On Lateness, Taylor—now a father twice over—continues to travel these paths with a warmth, deep immediacy, emotional complexity, and exploratory vision that are hallmarks of the HGM catalogue. Simply put: there is nobody making music like Hiss Golden Messenger.
Lateness of Dancers was recorded in a tin-roofed barn outside of Hillsborough, North Carolina, and includes many of Taylor’s longtime collaborators including Phil and Brad Cook, William Tyler, Terry Lonergan, Matt McCaughan, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, and longtime recording partner and collaborator Scott Hirsch.
