Shoegaze’s New Muse: NYC-based Jennie Vee Balances Noise And Pop On New Spying EP
With razor-sharp hooks shimmering over blurry guitars, Jennie Vee’s “nugaze” has caught the eye of Courtney Love and Alan McGee (Creation Records-Founder).
“Jennie Vee possesses the instant likeability of femme-fronted dream pop—Field Mice, Procedure Club, A.R. Kane—but trades any twee nonchalance for shoegaze’s heavy sonics.” Charlie Latan (Flaunt Magazine)

The Musebox announced today that NYC-based shoegaze/dream-pop artist Jennie Vee will release her second EP, Spying. These 6 unreleased tracks capture her brilliant pop juxtapositions—radio friendly on the surface, authentically indie on the inside. She’s already earned comparisons to Metric, Slowdive, and Black Tambourine. “If it was just the melody and the hooks,” she believes, “it would be cartoony. [You need] a wash of noise… You need that balance.”
Jennie grew up “the little ‘gothy’ person” in a small Ontario (Canada) town. But pen pals turned her onto the Manchester post punk scene. She escaped the “rocky desolation”, eventually moving to England, then to Nashville, and finally settling in NYC. A year spent “hermiting herself away”, writing and recording in her home studio, she played her first gig as Jennie Vee in Brooklyn last May. But the right people are noticing: starting in May, Jennie will be playing bass for superstar songstress, Courtney Love, on a tour with California goddess, Lana Del Rey. See their tour dates below.
So media, take note: Jennie Vee already caught the ear of Grammy Award-winning producer Chris Lord-Alge (Bruce Springsteen, Green Day, Stevie Nicks). He handpicked and remixed Jennie’s song “Wicked” last year. And talk about first impressions: Years after Alan McGee left a handwritten compliment for Jennie (he liked her demos), the Creation Records-Founder immediately booked Jennie for his first-ever Creation Unsigned Acoustic Night last September. Not to mention Snow Patrol’s Paul Wilson mixed the title track of her upcoming release. In the UK and Europe, Jennie is signed to 25 Hour Convenience Store, owned and operated by Gary Powell of The Libertines.
Jennie’s dedication to memorable songwriting, met with her enviable production choices, reimagine everything we love about ‘80s college rock—the unforgettable genius of The Primitives’ “Crash” or The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.” But she makes her songs her own, steeping her mixes in the soothing brashness of deeply revered shoegaze and dream pop pioneers like Ride and My Bloody Valentine. Her vocals, unfettered, deeply emotional, move you through perfectly arranged verses, into driving prechoruses that—as perfect pop is known for—naturally cascade into airy, memorable choruses.
Jennie Vee makes her hit-worthy dream pop sound easy—and look easier. She’s released sensorial music videos in collaboration with Katrin Albert, a photographer/videographer from Moscow. Lustrous camera work and Jennie’s impossible physique instill a breathtaking quality. Seriously, her beautiful presence is undeniable: After a serendipitous DJ gig, Courtney Love became her immediate BFF. Courtney has since described Jennie as her ‘muse’, and has styled her for several photo and video shoots featuring clothing designs from Love’s own Never The Bride line.
