Finding a ‘sure thing’ in the music industry remains as difficult a task as it has ever been. Beyond the raw talent, it is fair to say a huge slice of luck remains ever necessary. However, taking a sizeable punt on fast-rising Irish musician Hozier would appear to be of limited risk.
Having already accrued a healthy home fanbase off the back of the Irish only release of the incredible single Take Me To Church in late 2013 (due in the UK later this Summer), Hozier made his opening strides in both the UK and US with the fantastically assured From Eden EP in April of this year. It’s the timeless but contemporary sound of his rich, raw vocal and the bluesy, soulful songwriting that manages to sound both intimate and vast in equal measure.
Written and performed solely by Hozier, it earned him hefty exposure across the British airwaves, the influential blogs, and built up some weighty press quotes. It seemed quite possible that anyone could fall under the spell of this seriously impressive young musician.
Sedated is a similarly important sounding statement of intent. It strides with purpose, all darkly emotive vocals, piano flourishes and the suggestion of a big band that swells and soars. You’d be hard-pushed to compare him with anybody but the greats of yesteryear.

Tellingly, the reaction is being felt far beyond simple media acclaim. Hozier barely manages to announce a new show before it’s invariably sold-out. It’s a pattern repeated not just in the UK and Ireland, but across America too, where he’s sold-out every show he’s played. A recent stirring performance on The Late Show with David Letterman has sharply broadened his profile, and it feels as though this Summer, with prime appearances at Glastonbury, Latitude, Dublin’s Longitude, and the Reading and Leeds Festivals is going to be another telling stepping-stone in the career of this fascinatingly talented young artist.
