As part of their extensive world tour to commemorate their 1991 debut release, the LA based almighty Cypress Hill will take to London’s Brixton Academy on Sunday 19th June, their only headline UK show this year.
Across nine albums that have sold over 20 million copies worldwide, the group redefined and shattered the boundaries of hip-hop, crafting gutter-dirty tracks that fused deep bass lines with blissful, stoned-out melodies and aggressive hard rock riffs.
Originally known as DVX, Cuban born brothers Sen Dog (Senen Reyes) and Mellow Man Ace first joined forces with LA residents Muggs (Lawrence Muggerud) and B Real (Louis Freese) in 1986, pioneering their unique fusion of Latino beats and hip hop. After Mellow Man Ace’s departure in 1988, the group changed their name to Cypress Hill and continued to grow their fan base around LA, before eventually signing with Ruffhouse/Columbia in 1991.
Not gaining mainstream success until early 1992, several months after its initial release, their eponymous debut became a sensation, with singles ‘How I Could Just Kill a Man’ and ‘The Phuncky Feel One’ becoming underground hits. Cypress Hill’s famous pro-marijuana stance helped them to gain notoriety with the public and popularity internationally with the alternative rock community.
Released in 1993, second album Black Summer entered the charts at number one, spawning the group’s first major mainstream success with Insane in the Brain. This mainstream success brought a change of direction within the group, who added a new member to the line-up, drummer Bobo, and toured with Lollapalooza prior to the release of their third album, Temples of Boom. Heading in a darker direction than their first two records, Temples of Boom was received with mixed reviews.
Sen Dog left in early 1996, with Muggs spending the rest of the year working on his solo material. ‘Muggs Presents the Soul Assassins’ was met with rave reviews in 1997, followed by the release of Cypress Hill’s fourth record, IV, in 1998. Double disc set ‘Skull & Bones’ featured one disc of hip hop and one of more rock inspired material. To merge the groups’ two different musical personas, they fittingly recorded separate rock and rap versions of single ‘Superstar’. The videos for both recordings included famous artists discussing music, making it a hit on MTV.
2001 saw the release of rock based ‘Stoned Raiders’, followed by Jamaican influenced ‘Till Death Do Us Part’ three years later. After announcing their signing to legendary Priority Records in 2010, which since 2009 has been under creative direction from Snoop Dogg, the label released Cypress Hill’s eighth studio album ‘Rise Up’.
