Sydney duo Pamela join the Toast roster today, and return with ‘Better Than Before’ – a cathartic, melody-led track that moves through the aftermath of heartbreak with restraint and quiet clarity, capturing the shift from collapse to self-possession.
Written by Josh Kempen and Sarah Ellen, the track first took shape during a turbulent period – sketched in a share house and instinctively refined into something more resolved. “It’s a heartbreak song,” they explain “but not the collapse – the exhale after, when it all starts to feel lighter.”
That tension – melancholic but forward-moving – sits at the core of ‘Better Than Before’. Built around a hypnotic topline and a driving, memorable riff, the track leans into Pamela’s instinct for restraint and immediacy: emotionally direct but never overstated.
There are loose touchpoints – the rawness of Shakey Graves, the cool minimalism of The Strokes, a hint of Primal Scream – but the result feels distinctly their own. Intuitive, hook-led, and quietly euphoric.
The single lands alongside the announcement of their forthcoming debut EP, It’s Nice To See You Here – a project that further defines Pamela’s world: mood-driven, emotionally precise alt-pop that prioritises feeling over excess.
Off the back of recent releases ‘Skin Contact‘ and ‘Chain Reaction‘, Pamela have been steadily building momentum, shaped as much by their immersive live shows as by a clear and evolving identity. Today they will play two shows at The Great Escape in Brighton – their first international shows, an exciting expansion of their world. Recently signing with EMI Music Australia, Sony Publishing and WME for live, the duo enter this next phase with quiet but undeniable intent. Click here for dates and details.
