Introducing: Rising Star Lila Drew unveils new single + video ‘Same Old Song’
Rising vocalist and songwriter Lila Drew unveils her new single, ‘Same Old Song’, today via Capitol Records, listen here. The music video, directed by Stefan Kohli, also debuts—watch it here.
“‘Same Old Song’ came together at the end of a long New York summer,” says Lila. “I’d experienced heartbreak for the first time and was at that stage where rethinking everything had become part of my daily ritual. ‘Same Old Song’ is kind of a plea for reconsideration, even if I knew that wasn’t best for me. Like, ‘don’t you want to go back to the same old song and dance!’ It was difficult to admit that out loud, and I think the song has this really honest shamefulness about it that I’ve come to love—it brings me back to that moment.”
Produced alongside Sachi DiSerafino (Joy Again, Lorde, Dijon), with mixing by Grammy-winner Rob Kinelski and mastering by Dave Kutch, “Same Old Song” moves from heartbreak to regret to resolve, threading confessional piano with hook-filled alt rock that draws on inspirations from The Velvet Underground and Peter Gabriel to Bonnie Raitt and Third Eye Blind.
The single is the first in a series of upcoming tracks Lila made with DiSerafino, recorded over the last year and a half across studios in New York City, upstate New York and Sarm in London. The collaboration brings together Lila’s emotionally resonant songwriting, which she has been honing since childhood and which has grown alongside a deep engagement with poetry, and DiSerafino’s ear for visceral sonic detail: cowbells, snapping, clapping and vocal distortion.
London-born and New York-based, Lila Drew has been writing songs since she was 11 years old. Her music is rooted in personal storytelling and layered with rich sonic textures. A student of American poetry, her lyrical sensibilities have been shaped as much by the page as by the recording studio. More from Lila is imminent.
