Introducing: tg.blk with new single ‘So Bad’ External
An artist leading the charge of Kenyan hip-hop resonating on a global scale, tg.blk makes her return with the sultry summer daydream ‘So Bad’. Born and raised in the coastal city of Mombasa, Thigi soaked up its laidback spirit to create lo-fi tracks merging poetry with sun-kissed beats in the spirit of Earl Sweatshirt, Remi Wolf and Steve Lacy. After her landmark 2024 EP It’s Not That Deep earned streams in the tens of millions with Vince Staples among her champions, ‘So Bad’ marks an elevation of the sound which is effortlessly and undeniably tg.blk.
Capturing the first flush of romance, ‘So Bad’ is swooning, sexy and fun. Speaking on the inspiration for the single, tg.blk’s answer is immediate: “My girlfriend is really hot, so it’s easy to find inspiration. When I made the song, I thought of sitting by a fireplace with animal prints, shag carpets, velvet sofas and rose petals. It’s really corny stuff, but I love that kind of imagery – romantic and smooth, and I wanted to make a song that immediately gets you into that mood.”
Making music was always about community for tg.blk, whether it was making songs for fun with her friends in high school or searching for like-minded collaborators online. As the scope of her influences widened from the 80s RnB and Funk she was raised on to the beat-making alchemy of Timbaland and boom-bap, she started to carve out a distinctive sound which attracted a cult following. With no design beyond following her instincts and armed with little more than Logic and a mic in her bedroom, tg.blk has become one of our most compelling rising stars.
