Considering the first I can recall from Island Apollo was a chance flick through CBS, although I now understand the LA 5-piece have also been heavily featured on VH1 and Fox Sports, shows that driving drums, layered vocals, upbeat guitar and synth bass riffs still shine up nicely. Orange County, and San Diego, Island Apollo is authentically Southern Californian and isn’t afraid to show it.
Described as “combining a classic surf vibe with funky urban grooves, Island Apollo captures the spirit of a West Coast daydream come to life.” Only gripe in 2017 that means a bridge between funky indie-pop and full bloodied indie-rock, that said I don;t feel any scene should just stay still or fail to bring new sounds and skills to the fore. What elevates ‘Hold It Down’ is the songwriting and production, the latter by Eric Lilavois (Saint Motel, Atlas Genius). Collectively Island Apollo deliver. 7.8/10
