SOULFUL SINGER/GUITARIST JAMES VIII PREMIERES “SET YOU FREE”
“an impressive first showing from his six track EP [VIII]” – Popmatters
Brooklyn, NY. – Brooklyn-based indie blues-soul singer/songwriter James VIII (pronounced: James the 8th) will release VIII EP on June 1, 2018.
Today, Popmatters premieres the first track “inundated by funky horns, luminous guitar licks, and James’s own passionate croon” titled “Set You Free”.
With such a wide range of influences, James VIII’s sound is not easily categorized into any one genre, but he defines it simply as soul music. James was originally inspired by the sounds he heard at home, a combination of blues, funk and rock. “My mom listened to Eric Clapton, so I investigated his influences and found B.B. King and Robert Johnson. I also loved gospel, Motown, James Brown and gravitated toward the old school sound.” Simply put, James plays deep soul music, his own unique fusion of pop, folk, rock, jazz, blues and modern R&B. “I do whatever resonates with me. If it crosses genres, so be it. Music has always been my guiding light.”
That luminous radiance shines out of every track on VIII. James produced it with the help of a small group of friends, allowing every track to showcase a different aspect of his musical journey.
“a blend of each genre and the attitude that comes with it, making for a rich, emotive sound that comes across as searing in the studio as it does on stage.” –Popmatters
