“An essential new artist…the perfect introduction.” Pigeons & Planes“A funk-filled solo hang…Jenevieve may only have two tracks on the board, but both have been 24-karat vibes”  The Fader“Will have you crawling back for more after just one taste. Her style is not R&B, disco, new wave, or pop, but an amalgamation of them all.” Ones to Watch

‘Baby Powder’ is the incredible second track from Jenevieve, which is available now alongside a striking DIY video. This follows Jenevieve’s hypnotic first single ‘Medallion’.

Aged just 22 years old, Jenevieve is that classic (but totally contemporary) kind of pop star who only comes around once in a while. Her effortless fusion of sound, visuals and the modern cultural melting-pot was first informed by a childhood spent growing up in Miami: in itself a diverse city, but no doubt all the more so when (like Jenevieve) you can count Cuban, Spanish and French heritage on your mum’s side, and Bahamian and Irish on your dad’s. Jenevieve was born to a musical family, but in a similarly-nontraditional sense: her Abuela and mother are both ballet dancers, taking the next gen to flamenco and ballet classes essentially as soon as Jenevieve could walk. Whilst the work ethic and discipline of dance proved formative, the allure of old-school pop music has always been strong for Jenevieve.

It was there when her family made the move from Miami to Los Angeles (in part, she remembers, due to the constant terror of hurricanes). And it’s a passion which found a true creative ally when Jenevieve met her now-musical-partner Jean Benz, with whom she worked on the jazz-inspired, nocturnal hip-hop of ‘Medallion’, the glistening R&B-funk of ‘Baby Powder’, and her extraordinarily-accomplished album project to come. First premiering today, ‘Baby Powder’ is a playful but deeply personal journey into (says Jenevieve) “what my first love and heartbreak were like.” It’s that betrayal by someone you love after you finally let your guard down for them, but in Jenevieve’s hands, an experience which ultimately sees her remain at ease in her own skin. Jenevieve’s biggest influences today range from the mesmeric rhythm of Michael Jackson or the elegance and range of Whitney Houston to the fearless attitude of Aaliyah.

All stars who made themselves multi-sensory, but somewhat untouchable; all gone before their time; and all, arguably, taking something of the myth and magic of celebrity with them. Jenevieve’s not-immodest ambition is to reach back to that simpler, almost elementary way with pop, whilst still moving through the world as a headstrong, multicultural young woman who has learned the tough way to always dance to her own beat.
