“Ten vocalists, one instrumental, no rehearsals, just bars,” says Johnny Kowalski [Guitar, vox]. “We’ve always invited MCs on stage and it’s always been amazing, so it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, especially as Call Me Unique featured on our second full length release Kill The Beast. We hope that the cypher is a snapshot of a vibrant and enthusiastic scene, a bolt of energy in a dark world, and maybe even a tiny contribution to the wider universe of hip hop and sound system culture.”
The cypher was recorded at Day Light Robbery Studios, Jewellery Quarter, and was filmed and edited by West Midlands film maker Thomas Lee Rutter – who also filmed previous music videos Tequila Song and Something Wonderful.
Each MC wrote bespoke lyrics for the performance for the track originally titled Ragga Dub – an instrumental off the band’s forthcoming 2016 album, except J Grant, who just came along with Call Me Unique on the day having never met the band before! New friends were made among musicians and fans alike, and therefore, there are more cyphers in the pipeline.
JKSW have been an integral part of the Birmingham music scene for six years having released two albums Victory For The Monsters (2012) and Kill The Beast (2014). They’ve also become festival favourites at Boom Town, Board Masters, Swingamajig, Nozstock, Y Not and Tramlines and countless smaller events. The band have also successfully toured across France, Belgium, Netherlands, Italy, Solvienia, Germany and Czech Republic where they’ve always been graciously received.
