“this elegant suite of songs utilises yacht rock production for a sudden elevation in Cummings’ entire musical sensibility, as if the indie scene can no longer contain her” – London Standard, 5*
“a remarkably assured move into a very different sonic landscape for Cumming – a heartfelt love letter to some classic influences” – DIY, 4*
Today, Julia Cumming – longtime frontwoman of NYC rock band Sunflower Bean – shares the latest single from her debut album, Julia – out today in full on Partisan Records.
‘Fucking Closure’ comes alongside a Sophia Feuer-directed video and traces the emotional contradictions of a breakup. Featuring guitar from Nick Zinner, the track pairs sharp, confessional lyricism with a slow-burning melancholy, capturing the layered push-and-pull of letting go.
Speaking on the new track, Julia shares: “Getting closure always seems like the good idea, but sometimes the good idea isn’t what you actually want. Sometimes you just want the person back, all of them, their worst and their best. You miss when you shared in each other’s problems, and no amount of growth can change that wanting. Closure sets you free, but also solidifies what is gone.”
On the video, she elaborates: “I’ve always loved how in “Cool” by Gwen Stefani, you can feel the melancholy seeping from it. The music and video come together to tell a story that contains so much more longing than the lyrics alone. I wanted to use that as inspiration, and to include all these sweet moments so the love could still really be felt, not just the ending. I reached out to Sophie Feurer, who I previously worked with on Sunflower Bean’s “Nothing Romantic,” because she has a gift in storytelling, and making a music video feel like cinema.”
Known over the past several years as one of rock’s most compelling frontwomen, “a genre shapeshifter with her soft yet tough-as-nails voice,” as one critic described her, the album marks a defining new chapter for Cumming: not a rebrand, but a full creative rebirth.
Julia is a self-assured debut shaped by agency, artistic freedom, and the quiet courage of choosing oneself. Across its songs, Cumming finds freedom not through reinvention, but through release—letting go of expectation, perception, and the pressure to be enough for anyone but herself, while embracing joy, vulnerability, and autonomy on her own terms.
Last month, Julia made her international TV debut with a captivating performance of ‘My Life’ on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, offering viewers a compelling first glimpse of her solo sound on a national stage.
