Kate Nash–‘Under-estimate The Girl’

So Miss Nash has come under fire for changing direction with her new track Under-estimate The Girl, you will however find no complaints on withguitars. This is a sound that Nash states on her blog http://myignorantyouth.tumblr.com has been coming for sometime, as she has referenced The Buzzcocks as one of her favourite bands.

‘Under-estimate the girl’ is bass heavy rifftastic riot girl, all guttural anguished vocals drenched in guitar feedback. Kate may indeed be channelling ‘Pretty On The Inside’ era Courtney Love but those sweet indie harmonies still shine through. That said the rawness of this track IS a bold move, and one that sees her instantly join the ranks of Kathleen Hanna and Kat Bjelland.

All those thinking this is merely a publicity stunt may like to read that afore mentioned blog, where Kate asks for people to send her videos and mp3’s of their self written songs "it can be as lo-fi as you like" "be yourselves and don’t be afraid, it can be whatever you want, no judgement from me"

Admirable? Definitely the spirit of Riot Girl and in a time where – to me – the (female) band Savages are the most exciting thing I have heard in YEARS, I welcome the new Kate Nash with open arms. 8/10
