KAYLA PAINTER SHARES “DRONES”
Kayla Painter has unveiled a brand new track and video in the shape of “Drones.” Featuring her trademark sporadic drum programming and deep surging basslines, it’s the latest track to surface from the emerging Bristol-based producer.
“I wanted to create sounds which convey a sense of beauty but also touch on the mechanics of something underneath the beauty,” says Kayla. “This fitted really well into the concept of the synthetic appearing to be a perfect and graceful whilst underneath having more complex workings.”
The accompanying film for “Drones” marks Kayla Painter’s directorial debut. Borne of a fascination with post-Humanism, she was inspired by recent developments in technologies like virtual reality and 3D printing and how these have been portrayed in popular culture: films such as Ex-Machina, the Channel 4 series Humans and Michael Fassbender’s memorable performance as David in Prometheus.
I wanted to work with a dancer because I wanted to use someone that could push their bodies to extremes which ordinary people aren’t able to do. I was interested in playing with the limitations of the body, and showing someone exceed limitations through specific training of the body,” she explains. “Flavien Esmieu seemed like the perfect person to explore this with, not only is he a ballet dancer but he has been dancing since he was four years old. Over months of emailing, watching and exchanging clips he choreographed a dance which fitted the story I had been building of a synthetic in a factory-type setting.”
Kayla Painter live
22-26 June – Glastonbury Festival, Somerset
29+30 July – Farmfest, Somerset
Originally from Southampton, Bristol-based producer and instrumentalist Kayla Painter draws from techno, garage and post dub. Her experimental soundscapes are crafted from intriguing and restless rhythms, surging deep bass lines and warm washes of cloudy ambience.
Aside from her audio work, she performs live alongside a visual artis. Using a dual screen set up, images are projected in front of and behind Kayla, creating a beautiful immersive depth to the visuals. The unique, hypnotising AV show draws on the aesthetics and themes present in her artwork: dystopian futures, uneasy environments, a dream like science fiction that is created with clever use of audio and visual space.
Kayla recently signed to acclaimed Welsh label Turnstile Music, and celebrated by dropping the well-received tracks “Revert” and “efa.”
In 2015, Kayla was invited with 12 other female musicians from the UK to take part in a composition residency led by Beth Orton. The week long residency ended in a performance where Kayla collaborated with Beth Orton at Band on the Wall in Manchester. She has also played alongside the likes of Tim Hecker, Plaid, Patten, Rob Clouth, Nite Jewel, Blondes and the legendary Afrika Bambaataa.
